“You’re guilted into not wanting to go to Fair Work, but at the same time you know it’s your right” – Kate, a hospitality worker.

In recent years there’s been a lot of discussion about workers’ rights and exploitation of workers. So is your workplace actually doing right by you?

Whether it’s underpayment, some tricky accounting or even interference in your life outside of work, there are some employers who aren’t operating in the right way. Wage theft particularly is a huge issue, with recent research indicating that underpaying wages means South Aussies are losing around $500 million a year. It’s also important to be aware of your rights and ensure you’re being paid correctly, whether that’s as a casual, part-time or full-time worker. So are you concerned your workplace is violating your rights? What do you need to look out for? What can be done if you are being mistreated?

Wavelength spoke to Josh Peak from the SDA Union and Kate, a hospitality worker who’s experienced issues over wage disputes, about the issue.
