Winter in Adelaide is often a dreary, and sometimes confusing, time of the year. However, Music SA has announced the lineup for the 2019 Umbrella Winter City Sounds festival and judging by the venues and people they have planned, this will make the season much more of a breeze to get through.
Umbrella: Winter City Sounds is a two-week festival throughout the 12th of July until the 28th of July that celebrates and showcases a diverse range of local and national acts in contemporary music.
The festival has grown significantly since it was first introduced in 2016, with the 2019 program featuring 250 events across 111 venues. So if you were worried that they were going to be in strictly in the CBD, worry no further as the festival is expanding into the regional and rural parts of the state, including Port Lincoln, Berri, Mannum, Clare, Mount Gambier/Mount Schank, Victor Harbor, Ceduna and Port Augusta. It’s pretty safe to say that it won’t be difficult to find this year.
Events will kick off on Friday the 12th of July with an Opening Night Party at the newly developed Topham Mall in Adelaide’s West End, featuring legendary musician Archie Roach. Partnering with businesses in the area, the street party will showcase local and international bands.
“Umbrella Winter City Sounds is a fantastic opportunity to discover some great South Australian music and enjoy our city’s wonderful musicians and live music venues during winter,” says City of Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor.
In conjunction with the festival, Cry Baby Fest, a street festival, will be celebrating the first birthday of West End bar Cry Baby in Solomon Street that will be headlined by Kingswood. Girls Rock Adelaide are also expected to present a showcase event from their camp.
The 2019 program also encourages people to visit a number of brand new innovations, such as Umbrella Place, an eye-catching installation of colourful umbrellas above Vaughan Place, and The Producer Series in Rundle Mall, placing a “musician’s bedroom” inside a perspex box, to allow passers-by to observe local synth sensation, Luke Million.
On top of the acts and performances, there will be pop-up shows, kids programs, art installations, as well as the 2019 lineups for Scouted.
