Bless your senses with some new tunes on our playlist to get you through hump day. But, just a pre warning that they may entice you to drop everything and start the weekend early.
Benny Blanco and Calvin Harris – I Found You
The first add to our new wave of delightful melodies is ‘I Found You’, which features super Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris’ harmonic vocals. While Harris has been a huge figure in the public eye for a considerable amount of time, American DJ, Benny Blanco, has (compared to Harris’ wildly public life) somewhat flown under the radar even after helping write and produce major pop hits throughout the last 10 years. If you don’t think you’ve heard of him, think again. He’s wrapped his hands around commercial hits such as ‘Love Yourself’ by Justin Bieber and ‘Work Hard Play Hard’ by Wiz Khalifa. A total pool side tune (seems to be a reoccurring theme in Freshes playlist), Blanco’s second pop single ‘I Found You’ oozes with richness and somehow finds a line between a club banger and a beachside riff. It’s also been 2 years since Harris featured his extraordinary vocals and I have to say that I’m utterly here for it.
Hayden James feat. Running Touch – Better Together
Oh, Hayden James, where do I begin with this angelic song? I somehow imagine myself listening to this in an existential crisis, as a shower tune, with some mates or even at the beach (omg, OKAY Fresh I’ll go). You may be aware of James’ work after his smash hit ‘Just Friends’ reaching over 28 million listens on Spotify – no biggie. The Australian duo, James residing in Sydney and Running Touch being based in Melbourne, have nailed this hit, which makes me quite chuffed to be Australian. Breaking his standard rule of releasing one track a year, James fortunately made out lives a little bit better by surprising us with this one. Clever lyrics, check. Soul churning production, check. Even after having this song on repeat while writing this, I haven’t managed to tire from it, which is always a good sign. I know that Hayden James’ iconic work and myself are ‘Better Together’ – that’s for sure.
Set Mo feat. Thandi Phoenix– Afterglow
Next up on the list is ‘Afterglow’ by Set Mo. The DJ duo comprising of Nick Drabble and Stu Turner from Sydney have been releasing one track a month throughout the whole of 2018, getting better with every tune they rack up. I’ve got to say, their consistency is super important, and they certainly keep their audience wanting more every single time. Soulful and powerful vocals by Thandi Phoenix are the perfect edition to this mid-tempo track, with her raw storytelling ability being a key stand out. Watching Australia’s music scene develop more and more has been such a treat, and Set Mo are a testament to this.
Tyron Hapi feat. Lucas Marx – One Last Time
‘One Last Time’ has been a song in the works for quite some time, over a year to be exact. All I can say is that I’m so glad that Tyson Hapi left us hanging in order to perfect it. The Melbourne DJ has worked with an extensive list of local and international artists, this time featuring Chicago singer Lucas Marx, who has a contagiously ‘feel good’ voice. His vocal range complements Hapi’s production work weirdly well, and creates a tune residing on the line of individual funk and the radio scene. His musical evolution is one to keep an eye on.
