First up was new Aussie import Ivan Aristeguieta who with his infectious enthusiasm and clever outsider’s observations of Australianisms had the packed crowd in hysterics. Having moved to Australia from Venezuela just 3 years ago, Ivan has already already made a name for himself by being voted one of the best emerging talents at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
From our fascination with tomato sauce on everything, to the way we abuse the English language, Ivan hits the spot with his clever dissecting of Aussie slang and culture. His happy-go-lucky attitude and friendly personality ensures his audience go along the ride with him. A highlight of the show was his hilarious masterclass in Latin dancing, Aussie style! Ivan’s great skill is to make fun of cultural differences on both sides of the fence without sounding mean, derivative or cliche. 5 squirts of tomato sauce out of 5!
Next up was Thomas Green, who of course is well-known to Freshies as host of Thursday Kaboom. Not only does Tom do stand-up comedy and radio, but he acts in TV & film, and he is a school teacher! And it’s his profession that forms a large part of his show. Tom is a great storyteller, recalling plenty of hilarious run-ins with kids whilst “teaching in the north”.
