HQ threw yet ANOTHER kick-ass gig last night, featuring Aussie Hip-Hop king Illy and his support act – Adelaide star Tkay Maidza.
It was, unfortunately, the very last Illy show for 2014 but what a way for the rapper to see out his stellar year! Performing hits from his latest album ‘Cinematic’, he also treated long-time fans to tracks from his previous three records, including my personal favourite, Heard it All from the 2012-released Bring it Back.
After performing 70 shows this year, Illy saved Radelaide for last. It was evident he had had a long run; he was losing his voice and his drink of choice on-stage was H20 (how very un-rock-star of him!) but the energy from the crowd pushed him through what must have been an exhausting set. The cheers, the chants and the sing-alongs acted as fuel for the artist, as he jumped, bounced, hopped and threw himself around the stage. The crowd knew every word to every song, and were bouncing right alongside him,.
The strong, very familiar set of songs absolutely flew by, and before long, it came down to the “last” song of the night: Fresh 92.7 favourite One for the City. Re-emerging for his encore to the enthusiastic crowd who were hungry for more, he questioned – “Who wants one more?” 1 more? 2 more? Nope, we got 4 more! Cue deafening crowd eruption.
He had already exhausted his extensive playlist, so what more could he possibly have in store? The unknowing audience were in for a treat. Sampling Peking Duk smash High, Illy announced that his side-project Friday Flips would be back and available for download in early 2015
Two mystery songs still remained to round off his encore. Special guests the Hilltop Hoods waltzed out onstage to join him in a performance of their collaboration Coming Down. The crowd went ballistic! Adelaide really are proud of our boys Suffa and MC Pressure, and it certainly showed. Special guests indeed, performing with the rapper on tour for the VERY FIRST TIME ever! But with one song left in his encore, how on earth was Illy going to top that incredible performance? He ended the very last show date of his Cinematic Tour with, of course, his beautiful track, Cinematic. Incredible!
If you weren’t lucky enough to be at this sold out concert, then don’t worry! You can still catch pocket-rocket Tkay performing her Switch Lanes Tour this coming Saturday, December 20th.
