Close followers of the news would have picked up on the fact that Adelaide’s mighty clubbing institution HQ is set to enter it’s final chapter, at least in its current set up. Back in January we reported on the announcement that the site was to be sold and that there were various plans being thrown around for its future.
HQ’s heritage listed Newmarket Hotel at 1 North Terrace has stood on the same site for over 150 years and during its long life it has been the home of both HQ and its predecessor, legendary rave spot Heaven. During its long reign at the top HQ has taken out numerous top honours including the title of Best Club Night at the InTheMix Awards no less than 3 times and everybody from Snoop Dogg to Rufus and Armin Van Buuren have played at the location. However, with the recent announcement for the site’s future plans HQ will be facing some difficult decisions on its future.
The current plans for the location include demolition of the buildings surrounding the old hotel to make way for a $200 million, 24-storey, 400 apartment residential and retail tower which will no doubt benefit students at the nearby Uni SA as well as patients and visitors to the huge new Royal Adelaide Hospital and the SAHMRI research complex. The old hotel will remain and will be redeveloped back into a hotel/public house so something of its heritage as a social spot will be maintained but its cold comfort to the thousands of faithful clubbers and party goers who still visit week after week.
All being well this will just be the next step up in HQ’s mighty domination of Adelaide’s clubbing landscape but only time will tell so go get your party on before the site is closed. We’ll keep you posted.
