As we’ve just reached June, to say what a year 2020 has been so far is quite an understatement. With the 2019/20 bushfires, COVID-19, and most recently with the world showing their outrage over the death of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.
This has raised attention towards an ongoing example of police brutality, especially in Australia with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. According to The Guardian Australia, there have been 432 Aboriginal deaths in custody since 1991 and no police officers have been convicted over these deaths.
If you are wanting to make a contribution towards the Black Lives Matter movement locally, internationally, or globally, here are four ways to show your support.
Solidarity with Minneapolis! Justice for George Floyd Rally (June 6th)
The Adelaide Campaign Against Racism and Fascism and Sosblakaustralia have organised a rally for solidarity with those fighting for justice in the USA, as well as in protest of police violence, racism, and murders of people of colour and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. Social distancing and face masks have been highly encouraged by the organisers and SAPOL, who has approved of an exemption of the maximum number of people allowed in one area for the rally. However, Commissioner Grant Stevens has urged the public to participate as safely as possible.
“We are encouraging people who are feeling unwell or have any symptoms of unwellness to stay at home and not participate,” says Commissioner Stevens.
The rally will be meeting at the northern end of Tarndanyangga (Victoria Square) on Saturday the 6th of June from 12pm to 1:30pm. For more information or to express your interest in the rally, go the Facebook event page here.
